Comparison Between Downdraft Hood And Overhead Extraction

1. Basic Function

So what’s the difference between the downdraft hood and overhead extraction? A downdraft hood will pull the air across the surface of the stove and go through a filter. The fan in the hood will move the air through the ductwork beneath the floor or along the base of cabinets before it disperses out your house. Besides that, downdraft hoods will need to make an extra effort to make the air go in the other direction. The extraction rates will be a bit lower.

Overhead extraction is also called an updraft system. It pulls the steam, odor, moisture, and grease up from the cooktop and will go through a filter. The air will be directed through ductwork and disperses outside your house, or it will be recirculated back into your kitchen. As the steam rises, it is easier to extract from the above.

You will typically barely notice it in the kitchen. If you are a chef who cooks quite a lot, an overhead hood will be a cooking choice, but if you don’t cook much, why not choose the downdraft hood. You will want to note that downdraft hoods only rise 20–25cm above the counter. If you have higher pots, the downdraft hood might be a problem.

2. Design

When it comes to the design of the cooking hood, it depends on where you want it to be located. Downdraft hood offers a hidden option. One of the biggest attractions of a downdraft hood is that it is built to be flush with your countertop. You can raise it between 20–25cm above the surface when you want to use it. It can be practically invisible if you are not using it.

The vent unit is located behind the burner area. There is also another option where the vent opening is integrated into the stove surface with no pop-up function. If your kitchen is built with high ceilings or an open kitchen, it will be an advantage where it does not restrict any views around the room.

Overhead extraction is installed on walls or ceilings above your stove. So many overhead extractions are designed to be decorative, which can add a stylish element to your kitchen. You will need a flat ceiling to install it.

It is a personal preference when it comes to design. One advantage of downdraft hood that overhead extraction can’t do is providing a solution if your kitchen doesn’t have a flat ceiling. Also, it can look very contemporary to your house.

Another thing to note while buying a cooking hood is your budget. Overhead extractions come in a wide variety. So the price range is extensive. An expensive hood doesn’t mean it performs well. If you want one that looks nice, you may have to fork out a bit more on it.

While downdraft hoods look very modern and new, that doesn’t mean it will cost you a bomb, and it is out of your range. They are not as expensive as you think. They are nearly the same price as a good overhead extraction.

You will want to take note of the installation as it will also affect the cost for each different type of cooking hood.

4. Installation

For the installation, both types of cooking hoods will be different. Downdraft hoods are probably just about edge this one. It will have more access, and it is easier by ducting through the floor. Overhead extraction is much more norm and is a marginal edge. Most construction firms will have enough experience to install them.

The installation cost depends on the model, manufacturer, and venting method. Overall, the installation cost for both types of cooking hoods is comparable. A downdraft hood is part of your cooktop design. It will have to accommodate the vent while installing, which can be expensive. While overhead extraction can be installed over any stove, the price will be in a wide range. To have better efficiency, it should be installed by a professional, increasing the cost.

With these few comparisons between the downdraft hood and overhead extraction, we hope that you will have a better idea of which type of cooking hood you want to get. Be sure to know more about the cooking hood you want before buying it.
